Swim with a fist – it’s as simple as that. Make a tight fist with both hands and you’ll feel like the water is slipping past your hands which it is. Fist drill makes you notice the other parts of your arm and how they grab the water. Fist drill will encourage you to get your forearm perpendicular with the direction of travel (vertical in the water) because that’s how the forearm best grabs water. The hand does not have this issue because we have wrists that bend that get our hand to vertical quickly. When you take away the surface area of the hand the elbow then becomes the most important joint and thus the elbow should stay high in the water when performing this drill. Don’t cheat yourself and make a half-fist. Make a tight fist like you were going to punch something.
